The Casa de la Zacatecana (House of the Zacatecana) is one of the hidden gems of Quertaro, Mexico. This stunning example of colonial architecture is located on the Avenue Independencia #59 in the historic downtown of Quertaro, Mexico (which is a UNESCO world heritage site).
This house, which is now a museum, was made famous thanks to the books of Don Valentin Frias which spoke of how the first owner of this house, a Sr. Antonio Origel, who was murdered by his wife. His wife was from the town of Zacatecas (and thus she was called the Zacatecana which means a women from Zacatecas). According to the legend, there marriage was arranged, and the couple had no love for each other.
The husband was constantly away on business trips and the lady was left alone for most of the year. During one of these times alone, she started having an affair with one of the servants of the house. During that affair she decided that she did not need to have her husband to live, but that she did want to retain the wealth. So, she convinced her lover to murder her husband and had his body hidden in the basement of the of the house
The lover did so, but to his surprise, as soon as the Zacatecana found out that the murder was successful she also murdered him and hid the body in the same place as her husbands body. For many years in the town of Quertaro there were rumors surrounding the sudden disappearance of the owner of the house and the servant but there was never any proof of what had happened. It was not until a few years later that the town learned the truth.
While working on some improvements to the building that were demanded by the Zacatecana, the workers ran across 2 skeletons in the basement. Immediately, upon learning this, the workers reported this to the Spanish authorities. By the time the Spanish authorities arrived at the home of the Zacatecana, they found her hanging from her balcony. She had committed suicide.
Today the building is a museum. In the basement you can still find the replica of the two skeletons that represent the murdered husband and lover of the Zacatecana. There is even a legend, that if you go to the back patio at the right time of day, you can see the ghost of the Zacatecana in one of the windows. The rest of the building is dedicated to display the wide variety of art and furniture that was collected from around the world by the Zacatecana with the wealth of her husband.
In addition the the Museum of the Zacatecana, the city of Santiago de Quertaro, Mexico boasts of a wide variety of cultural activities through out the year and is also known for being home for some of the top Spanish immersion Schools in Mexico. For those who are looking to learn Spanish in Mexico, Quertaro is an ideal choice.
